Night ‘n Day reaps the cost benefits of Infinity–Pricer electronic shelf labels
Night ‘n Day is one of New Zealand’s best-known retail convenience brands. Founded in Dunedin, the company has spent nearly 35 years serving local communities through a growing network of 54 franchise stores by offering hot food, barista coffee and everyday essentials 365 days a year.
To continue delivering value in an increasingly dynamic retail environment, Night ‘n Day looked to modernise its pricing strategy with a solution that could save time, improve accuracy and support long-term growth.
Here’s how Night ‘n Day stores implemented an integration between Infinity and the Pricer electronic shelf label solution that’s helped them save both time and money without compromising the essence of their operation.
“ “We should always be looking for ways to become more efficient, saving time and energy from doing tasks that could be completed by technology. That way we can focus on bringing value to our network of stores and enhancing the shopping experience of our customers.””
The challenge
Night ‘n Day needed a way to ensure that stores were keeping current with price updates while not burdening store staff with the task of maintaining shelf labels. They knew that other industry operators were implementing electronic shelf labels and saw it as a great way to save their stores time while leveraging an exciting new technology.
So, in 2024 they ran a pilot at one store, Night ‘n Day Regent in Dunedin. They could immediately see how useful the technology was for providing current prices.
But a couple of issues remained. The initial solution involved manually uploading price files to each store whenever there were price changes. It also didn’t allow for pricing specials to be displayed on shelf labels, potentially costing the store additional sales from promotional items.
The solution
Craig Latimer, Night ‘n Day’s National Operations Manager, was aware that NZESL’s Pricer solution had an impressive list of nationwide customers and had heard great feedback from other retail brand representatives. As an Infinity customer, Craig was also looking for a way to integrate Night ‘n Day’s inventory and price management solution with electronic price labels for an all-in-one solution.
By working with Triquestra and NZESL, Night ‘n Day was able to leverage an existing integration that sends current Infinity product and pricing information, including specials, to the Pricer software at regular intervals.
Any new or updated prices are automatically picked up by Pricer and displayed on the electronic shelf label without the need for human intervention.
The power of partnership
As part their regular customer–vendor engagement, Night ‘n Day met with Triquestra to capture requirements and map out the way forward. Once the project got the go-ahead, all three parties collaborated to overcome any hurdles and ensure the roll-out went smoothly.
Night ‘n Day Regent again became the focus of a pilot. This allowed the teams to identify hardware and software updates that needed to be done at all stores with minimal disruption to the Night ‘n Day national network. Resolving issues early made rolling out the integration to other stores a much more seamless experience.
As Craig explains, communication and partnership were also essential to success.
“We all worked together with the same outcome in mind, and collaboration between all teams was very high. Triquestra and NZESL provided support in the areas where we needed it along the various milestones of the project, so we felt supported throughout the journey.”
The results
Implementing the integration has reaped impressive results across the Night ‘n Day network.
Time savings in the Support Centre
The integration has eliminated the need for the Support Centre to manually push out a weekly batch update of changed and new prices, freeing up an hour a week for the Support Centre team.
Efficiency gains in stores
Store staff also no longer need to spend up to an hour a week manually updating their own local label pricing, meaning that inventory pricing and shelf pricing are always in sync and leaving store staff free to get on with delivering great customer service.
Instilling trust through accuracy
Customers now always see up-to-date promotional pricing, giving them even more reason to shop at Night ‘n Day and instilling confidence that they are getting the best deals.
The results are plain to see. As Craig says,
“We now have a solution that greatly highlights our promotions, and price updates are happening without any human intervention.”
Word of the Infinity–Pricer integration and the gains to be made is quickly spreading across Night ‘n Day stores, as three more locations recently confirmed they will be moving to electronic shelf labels.
Craig is convinced that more stores will follow as the benefits become clear.
“I can see more of the stores in our network investing in this technology as they realise the cost savings. This will also enhance consumer trust that the prices being displayed are accurate.”
Key results
- Cost and time savings in stores.
- Accurate and up-to-date pricing, including promotional pricing.
- Streamlined operation in the Support Centre.
For Craig, the experience of working with Triquestra and NZESL has brought with it a larger lesson as well.
“We should always be looking for ways to become more efficient, saving time and energy from doing tasks that could be completed by technology. That way we can focus on bringing value to our network of stores and enhancing the shopping experience of our customers.”
